Hopefully Survived (Mount Slamet)

Who doesn't know Mount Slamet? Especially hikers who like hiking adventures. It is said that according to local residents' beliefs, If Mount Slamet had a major eruption, the island of Java would be split into two parts. Therefore, the mountain is called 'slamet' which is taken from Javanese which means safe. This name was given because it is believed that this mountain has never had a major eruption and provides a sense of security for local residents.

Mount Slamet is a conical volcano on the island of Java, Indonesia. Mount Slamet is located between 5 districts, namely Brebes Regency, Banyumas Regency, Purbalingga Regency, Tegal Regency, and Pemalang Regency, Central Java Province. Mount Slamet is the highest mountain in Central Java and the second highest on the island of Java after Mount Semeru in East Java.

This trip started from Purwokerto using a motorbike that I borrowed from a friend. I went together with my friend, Wahyau, to Bambangan basecamp, Purbalingga in the morning. Arriving at Bambangan basecamp after taking 90 minutes, we immediately took care of hiking permits to get entry tickets. We also got free tree seeds to plant in designated places during the hike. After everything was settled, we immediately walked uphill. Let's go!

Greeted by the hiking gate on the Bambangan route

The hiking gate of Mount Slamet immediately greeted us when we just started walking. The beginning of the hike passes through the gardens of local residents as long as the eye can see. We entered the pine forest after planting tree seeds that we brought from Bambangan basecamp to the place provided. It's truly beautiful, the peak of Mount Slamet can be seen proudly from the start of the hike in the distance.

Up to Post 3 the hiking route was indeed friendly, but several times we also had to overcome inclines which were very draining. At Post 3, we decided to rest for a long time because it was already midday. We planned to set up a tent at Post 5, because the area there is quite large to set up a tent and it's not too far to get to the top. Oh yes, on this Bambangan route we didn't find any springs, so we had to save the water we brought.

We finally arrived at Post 4 (Samarantu), which is said to be a very famous place among hikers for its mystical stories. The name Samarantu post is taken from the words Faint (in bahasa; samar) and Ghost (in bahasa; hantu). The Samarantu post is marked by two large trees parallel to each other, resembling a door. This door is believed to be the entrance to the kingdom of astral creatures. Not infrequently this creature shows its form vaguely. Indeed, when we passed this post the hair on the back of our necks got a little goosebumps because the atmosphere was a bit different. I don't know the truth. What is clear, I believe that wherever there is, there will always be creatures other than humans. We must respect each other among God's creatures wherever we are.

Next we continued our journey to Post 5 after we passed the Samarantu Post. After 60 minutes of walking, we finally arrived at Post 5. One tent had been put up, the hikers who had previously stayed at Post 5 had taken turns going down. We are ready to process the food logistics that we bring into delicious food for our stomachs. After brewing coffee and enjoying it, for some reason the body wants to go to sleep quickly. After sunset, we decided to sleep because our bodies were really tired. Don't forget, the next day before sunrise we have to hurry to continue our journey to the top.

Mount Sindoro and Mount Sumbing are visible in the distance at sunrise.

We woke up from the dream after our cell phone alarm woke us up at half past four in the morning. All the equipment we wanted to bring to the top was ready in the small bag we brought. We accompanied the steep hiking route with the light of a headlamp mounted on our heads.

The vegetation boundary is the last post to get to the top of Mount Slamet. The sun peeked behind the east and greeted us beautifully. We arrived at the peak of Mount Slamet, the highest point in Central Java with a height of 3,426 meters above sea level (masl). A very wide and expansive crater was emitting smoke before our eyes. Indeed, Mount Slamet is still active. We didn't stay long, we took some pictures as memories there. After warming our bodies with coffee, we immediately went down to return and set up the tent at Post 5. That same day we returned from Bambangan basecamp to Purwokerto to rest. Really, Slamet is very tiring.
