Climbing Mountains between Lectures (Mount Lawu)

"Where would it be nice to have four days off?", i asked in my heart. Taking a break in the middle of the month in between busy lectures week routines made me want to find a calm atmosphere. Finally I decided to hike the mountain on the border of Central Java and East Java Province, namely Mount Lawu.

Mount Lawu is located on the border of Central Java and East Java Provinces, Indonesia. Mount Lawu is located between three districts, namely Karanganyar Regency (Central Java), Ngawi Regency and Magetan Regency (East Java). This mountain has three peaks, Hargo Dalem Peak, Hargo Dumiling and the highest peak, Hargo Dumilah (3,265 meters above sea level).

I invited my campus friend, Sonny, to go to Solo City from Baranangsiang Terminal in Bogor City in the morning. Initially, i wanted to hike the mountain alone but in the end i invited my friend the day before without a plan. We got a bus ticket for IDR 250,000 from Kampung Rambutan Terminal to Tirtonadi Terminal. The bus left at noon for Solo City and we arrived at dawn. Next, the journey continues by small bus to Cemorosewu in Sarangan, East Java. We arrived at Cemorosewo basecamp and immediately bought tickets to hike Mount Lawu for IDR 5,000. After we bought breakfast at a food stall, we immediately started hiking.

The hiking starts at 8 am from the Cemorosewu gate. Indeed, the hiking route through Cemorosewu is said to be the easiest compared to other routes, namely Cemorokandang and Candi Cetho. However, the route via Cemorosewu is more uphill. However, if we take this route we will reach the top faster than other routes. The hiking via Cemorosewu is quite well organized. The road is made of rocks that have been laid out from the start of the hike to the next posts.

After walking four hours uphill we arrived at Post 4. There, we decided to take a long break. Brewing coffee and opening the snacks we brought was quite useful for filling up lost energy. We chatted with several hikers from several areas. After continuing our leisurely journey on a gentler path for less than an hour, we arrived at a spring called Sendang Drajat. I experienced bathing in a mountain for the first time in my life. Indeed, near Sendang Drajat there is a place for hikers to clean their bodies where the water is taken directly from Sendang Drajat. After feeling fresh in our bodies we continued our journey to Hargo Dalem, where the highest stall in Indonesia is located, Warung Mbok Yem.

Hunger and tiredness make the body want to quickly get to the shop. The view was truly beautiful when we almost arrived, we could see views of the hills above and views of the savanna below the route we were on. Finally we arrived at Warung Mbok Yem. We ordered two portions of pecel rice plus fried eggs with hot sweet tea to enjoy while looking at the view. So delicious, we can't find it in the city at this moment.

We deliberately didn't bring a tent from Bogor because initially we wanted to rent a tent at the Cemorosewu basecamp, but the basecamp guard there said that hikers could stay overnight in the stalls near the peak of Mount Lawu. We finally decided to stay at Warung Mbok Yem one night.

Morning arrived as the sun came out of the sun, a yellow line on the horizon was visible when we left Warung Mbok Yem. The distance from Warung Mbok Yem to the top of Mount Lawu can be said to be quite close, only taking approximately one hour's journey. After we prepared the logistics that we would bring to the top, we immediately started the summit attack.

"Sang Saka Merah Putih" proudly fluttered above the monument marking that we had arrived at the peak of Mount Lawu. At that time, the peak was very busy with hikers. We also had to take turns taking photos at the monument marking the peak of Mount Lawu. After enjoying the coffee we brewed, we decided to go back down to Warung Mbok Yem and descend from Mount Lawu to return to my very tiring college routine in Bogor City.

Mount Lawu is very popular among hikers due to its mysticism and being a sacred place in Java. Everyone who wants to go to Mount Lawu must understand the various unwritten prohibitions against doing something, whether in words or deeds. I don't know, for me every place we visit must maintain our politeness, manners and ethics. Just as we are guests who come to a house that has an owner. All our bad qualities must be eliminated. Most importantly, understanding and mutual respect between God's creatures must be carried out wherever we are. Thank you for reading the story of my journey on Mount Lawu. Warm greetings from me.

Thank you Lawu, see you next time
